Time For An Oil Change?

When are you going to change the oil filter in your car again? If you’re like most of us these days, there is a little plastic sticker in the upper left hand corner of the windshield that tells you when it’s time. One of my patients is an auto mechanic. I asked him if it was really necessary to change the oil every 3000 miles. Without hesitation he responded, “It’s the best thing you can do for your car! If you don’t change it, the oil turns to sludge. And before you know it the engine knocks, gas mileage goes into the toilet and you start to lose power.”
Unlike our cars, our bodies don’t have a removable plug that allows us to drain and replace the blood when it turns to sludge, or gets toxic. However, our bodies have a similar filtration system. Guess what! The best thing you can do for your body is to clean that system out on a regular basis.
A 1989 study reported that over 1000 new chemicals are created every year. Today that number is even higher. Everything that comes in contact with your body such as air, water, food, alcohol, medications, smoke, pollution, cosmetics, etc. must be dealt with in some way. The body’s filtration system metabolizes, filters, and excretes everything through the liver, kidneys, and bowels.
Much like your car, when this filtration system is neglected your body becomes toxic. These toxins continue to circulate through the blood and can get deposited in the tissues. Eventually, when this toxic load becomes too great, things start to breakdown. Symptoms of toxicity are numerous. From Lorrie Medford’s book Why Do I Feel So Lousy? they can range from fatigue, weight gain and allergies, to digestive disorders like reflux, bloating, gas, and constipation, to high cholesterol and high blood pressure, to headaches, fibromyalgia, fluid retention and PMS.
There are a number of ways to help clean out all this toxic sludge and get the engine running in top shape again. Fasting and sauna’s can be helpful when done routinely. But if you have never done a full detoxification, these may not be enough. Deeper cleansing can be accomplished through a monitored detox program. In our office we focus on nutritional therapy, ionic detoxifying footbath treatments and acupuncture. Colon hydrotherapy is also very beneficial.
When your car starts to sputter and stall we know its time for a tune-up and oil change. Unfortunately, when we start to lose energy, gain weight, heal slowly, ache and hurt we think it’s because “we’re just getting old.” Maybe that’s your oil light letting you know that you are long over due for a tune-up and oil change.
